What reupholstery costs
Shops quote in two parts: labour for the piece, and fabric by the yard. Almost no shop here publishes either number, so what follows is the exception rather than the going rate. Treat it as a figure to plan around, not a quote.

Fabric is a separate bill. A three-seat sofa takes 14 to 18 yards, which adds $560 to $720 at $40 a yard and closer to $1,600 at $90. Supply your own and the shops that charge for handling it publish $15 to $20 a yard.
Finding the right shop
Start with the trade, not the town
A furniture workroom and an auto trim shop are different businesses with different benches. Pick the trade first and the city list narrows itself.
Read what the shop says it takes on
Every listing records the work the shop names on its own site: antique frames, commercial seating, convertible tops, foam and cushions, and how it prefers to quote. That is the question a star rating cannot answer.
Get two or three estimates before you commit
Shops that quote from photographs are marked as such, which turns a Saturday of driving into twenty minutes. Expect any photo number to move once somebody has the piece on a bench.

Reupholstering a three-seat sofa runs about $4,000 to $6,500 plus fabric, so it beats replacing only when the frame is worth the money, a hardwood frame with eight-way hand-tied springs, or a piece you actually care about. How long does reupholstery take?
Most reupholstery jobs take one to three weeks once the shop starts work, with two to four weeks common in busy periods. Custom-built pieces run six to eight weeks. Fabric delivery, frame repair and the shop's existing queue are what move the number, not the size of the piece. Full guide.
